
Among the restaurants and stores along Commerce Avenue, there are places for shoppers to get nose piercings and new tattoos.
Heart Attack Tattoo opened in downtown storefronts in early June. This week, the store added Piercer to its roster of body artists.
Owner Kevin Bryson has worked as a tattooist in Longview for seven years and years in Portland before moving to Washington. In early 2022, Bryson suffered a heart attack. As he recovers, Bryson said his experience prompted him to work on his long-time goal of starting his own business with his wife.
“It was a pivotal moment. I realized that I needed to move from talking about things to actually doing them. It didn’t work,” said Bryson.

Heart Attack has a staff of 4 professional tattoo artists, 2 apprentices and a piercer. Apprenticeship is his program of training for novice tattoo artists, where he works under an experienced designer for over a year to provide more elaborate designs.
Bryson said his staff comes from many of the stores where he previously worked in Longview and southwestern Washington. A new piercer, Angela Ross has previously worked with many artists at other local stores.
One of the tattoo artists, Scarlett Hienz, said: “I think I’ve accomplished something because of the people who work here.
A table in front of the store holds a portfolio of each artist’s work for customers to flip through. Some designers specialize in color works, while others focus on grayscale his art or traditional lines his designs.

The store’s decor is a mix of creepy and charming. The front of the store is dotted with plastic skulls, strange paintings, and other oddities.The plants and the natural light coming in through the front windows make the store feel brighter.
Bryson said he hopes the business will be attractive to potential successful people. Part of it, he said, is the camaraderie among staff members.
“The store always has a positive attitude.”
Bryson said he’s happy with the initial traffic the shop has received. welcome. Nearly every day, the store attracts walk-in visitors, as well as those wanting to pick up their first piece.

“Longview is like a small town, it’s not big, but people want to get tattoos, so there are a lot of tattoo shops. There’s a real demand,” Hyentz said.
