You kept waiting for Carson Strong to get his chance.
Never happen.
The Eagles on Monday released a strong-armed rookie quarterback after throwing just four passes the entire preseason and getting few practice reps in training camp. The news was first reported by Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.
What makes Strong’s claim strange is that the Eagles guaranteed him a franchise-record $320,000 when they signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent from Nevada in April.
Then they wouldn’t let him play.
Strong came to the Eagles with his college honours. In his last two years at Reno, he led his BCS overall in 63 touchdowns his passing, 7,033 passing yards, and interception rate (one for every 73 attempts he made), at 70.1%. recorded his second highest success rate in .
A big problem with Strong is his surgically repaired knee, and questions about his health and mobility have knocked him out of the draft once and for all after being considered a #1 pick.st– round talent.
But it never mattered to the Eagles. Although he rarely did anything, he never missed a practice, and the anticipated competition for the third quarterback spot between Strong and Reid Sinnett never materialized.
Strong had very few practice reps and never got enough work as a passer to get into any kind of rhythm.
Strong did not appear in the preseason opener against the Jets, threw just one pass against the Browns and three in Miami on Saturday night. He completed one 6-yard pass to John Hightower in four preseason attempts.th-Quarterly mopping duty.
He played only 7 of the Eagles’ 198 preseason offensive snaps. Sinnett played 100, Gardner Minshew had 86 and Jalen Hurts had 8.
What makes this even weirder is that Sinnett has been terrible in the preseason, he threw 48 passes while Strong threw just 4.
For as long as 1999 preseason stats have been available, no Eagles rookie quarterback has thrown so many passes in a preseason. The previous record low for that period was Andy Hall’s 18 tries in 2004.
NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro told Strong Saturday night after the Eagles wrapped up their preseason with a game against the Dolphins in Miami.
“This is part of a great organization, a great football team with a great coach and a great owner,” he said. “It’s a top-run organization from owner to GM to coaches. I am very happy to be.”
But not now.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman opened up to the media on Tuesday and is sure to mention Strong’s bizarre Eagles career.
Nick Sirianni didn’t say much when asked about Strong, only saying the team wanted to see as much of Sinnett as possible.
“Everyone is in different situations and different scenarios,” he said Saturday night after the game. “We wanted Reed to do the job. We wanted Gardner to do the job. I wanted to.”
Assuming Strong, 22, clears the wave, the Eagles could try to sign him to their practice squad, but if they like him enough to keep him as a growth prospect, training camp and Want to see what he can do in preseason? The game?
If you’re Strong, do you really want to stay in an organization that never gave you a chance at training camps or preseason games?
