Energy services provider Expro is leading the industry’s efforts to meet environmental goals by developing digital technologies that help drilling contractors and operators reduce an estimated 146 tons of CO.2 Annual emissions – equivalent to 58 transatlantic flights.
The oil and gas industry has introduced many digital innovations, but Tubular Running Services (TRS) has historically been a lagging sector. But Expro is driving the automation of his rigs thanks to the iTONG™ system. In addition to reducing emissions, the iTONG system is designed to help protect personnel and is estimated to save operators about 50 hours of rig time per installation, saving $2 million annually.
The iTONG system is the industry’s most technologically advanced single push-button tubular make-up solution, allowing operators to control, execute, validate and validate all connected make-up via a tablet or control chair. With a single button press, casing and tube joints can be created at specific torques or disassembled in an automated sequence.
By reducing the manpower required for tubing operations, rigs using iTONG can reduce annual emissions from rig time, travel and accommodation by an estimated 146 tons per year. That’s the equivalent of cutting his 10-hour flight from Oslo to Houston 58 times. throughout the year.

The technology has undergone significant field trials on high-efficiency jack-up rigs in the North Sea, participating in 22 jobs and making over 1,600 connections. Further research revealed that this technology saves approximately 50 hours of rig time per year. This equates to approximately $2 million per year, equivalent to 52 round-trip helicopter flights for the TRS crew.
As a further example of the company’s commitment to moving the industry forward, the iTONG is paired with Expro’s iCAM.® A torque-turn tubular connection makeup system that uses artificial intelligence to make data-driven decisions and ultimately determine whether a makeup was successful.
Earlier this year, Expro received the spotlight on new technology® Award for Autonomous Well Intervention System Galea™ at the Offshore Technical Conference (OTC) in Houston. Last month, Ed.
