WOOD RIVER — The Celebrate Wood River Performing Arts Council has announced a 2022-23 concert series kicking off on September 18th. The series takes place at 2:30 pm at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Center with comedian and magician Gail Bekwer.
Becwar’s energy, quick wits and audience participation have made his shows popular across the country. Growing up in a family of magicians, he first encountered entertainment as a child in 1967, appearing in his father’s traveling magic show. He has performed for all ages in front of audiences of thousands around the world with his unique brand of clean, interactive, fast-paced magic and comedy.
The 2022-23 season also includes:
— Offutt Brass, Sunday, October 23rd at 2:30pm. The brass ensemble of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, the Offuto Brass, consists of two trumpets, a horn, a trombone, a tuba and percussion. Offutt Brass’ world-class musicians showcase Air Force excellence and precision in every performance.

— “Statue of Liberty…The Surprising Rest of the Story,” Sunday, February 19, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. Darrell Draper, a self-proclaimed “edutainer,” performed for us costumed recreations of Theodore Roosevelt and Peter Sarpy last season. It offers a 45-minute program about the “rest of the story” that many people are unaware of. There will be a question and answer period after the lecture.
— The Toasted Ponies, Sunday, April 16, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. Toasted Ponies combines the best of both traditional and contemporary bluegrass music. Look for great harmonious singing and hot instrumental music in typical pony performances. These musicians are seasoned professionals who love playing music.
Celebrate Wood River will host a Christmas Cantata on Sunday, December 11th at 2:30 PM. An Easter cantata will be performed on Sunday, April 23 at 2:30 pm. Both performances are at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1108 Dodd Street, Wood River.
In addition to the concert series, Friendship Gatherings are scheduled several times a year on Saturdays at 9:30 am. That schedule includes:
— Medicine of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 15 October. Dr. Richard Frühling discusses medical care during this early 1800s expedition. Also known as the Discovery Expedition, President Jefferson commissioned this select group to explore and map the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase.
— “April 22, 2023, World War II prisoner of war camp in Nebraska. Local historian Michelle Setlik details the history of Nebraska’s WWII prisoner of war camps and their impact on the area.
