A professor of brain and cognitive science from Rochester explains how biased thinking affects your weekly fantasy football game.
Renee Miller has been playing fantasy football since 2006. But it wasn’t until the fall of 2012 that Miller, a professor of brain and cognitive science at the University of Rochester, realized she could combine neuroscience expertise with fantasy and her love of sports. .
Since then she has published a short e-book called Cognitive biases in fantasy sports: Is your brain sabotaging your team? I have written numerous articles on this topic. As the NFL gears up for next season, Miller recently wrote about how cognitive biases affect a person’s weekly fantasies her football game every week in her Yahoo Sports. So what that is Cognitive biases in fantasy football?
Cognitive biases are mental processes that can lead to illogical and irrational decisions. In Fantasy Sports, Miller wrote: There are many forms of this biased mental processing, she explains. Common examples of cognitive biases such as fantasy sports include:
- donation effect: Overvalue what you invested
- Superiority effect: The first events or items in a series are easier to remember than later events or items
- recency bias: overestimate what happened recently
- confirmation bias: believe information that confirms previously held beliefs while ignoring conflicting data
Overreaction from fantasy sports participants tends to dominate, especially on social media, especially during the first week of a fantasy season. The dominance effect means that this first week’s results may weigh more heavily on a person’s memory than subsequent weeks’ results.
