Driver education classroom guidance

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) provides driving education instruction to help students meet Virginia’s requirements for obtaining a driver’s license. For Grade 10 Health and Physical Education (HPE II), each high school provides a minimum of 30 hours of classroom driver instruction.

Virginia Code (§22.1-205) allows students and their parents residing in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William and Planning District 8, which includes the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, and Manassas. / Guardian required. , and Manassas Park – to attend 90 minute parent-child presentationPWCS students and parents are required to attend meetings together as part of the classroom driver education course.

Both students and parents/guardians are required to attend a 90 minute safe driving presentation for teens as part of the classroom portion of the driving education curriculum. This meeting is only for her PWCS students currently enrolled in HPE II or her PWCS students who have completed HPE II. HPE I students are not eligible to attend this conference. This program requirement must be met before a student can receive a Driver Education Certificate on a Certificate of Completion Card (DEC-District 8 Card).

2022-23 90 Minute Parent/Guardian and Teen Presentations

PLEASE NOTE: The scheduled 90 minute parent/guardian and teen driver education conference will be held in person. Meeting capacity may be limited. Students and parents are required to attend meetings held at the school.

Please contact your student’s HPE II teacher for upcoming meeting dates and information for the 2022-23 school year.

Rear wheel (road/range) driver education program

Behind the wheel instruction provides approximately 14 hours of driving observation combined with driving in residential areas, local roads, and interstates. Contact your school’s Driver Education Coordinator for more information on availability for behind-the-wheel classes.

If the applicant is over the age of 15 years and 6 months but under the age of 18, a learner’s permit can be obtained at the Customer Service Center of the Department of Motor Vehicles after meeting some requirements. Driving restrictions for teens

Virginia’s driving limits aren’t meant to punish teen drivers, they’re meant to keep you safe while you gain valuable driving experience. Studies have found that these restrictions help reduce the number of car accidents among young drivers.

Curfew restrictions

If you are under the age of 18, Virginia law prohibits you from driving from midnight to 4am unless:

• To or from the place of business where you are employed.
• Activities to and from activities supervised by an adult and sponsored by a school or civic, religious or public authority.
• With a licensed spouse over the age of 18 and a parent or parental adult seated in the passenger seat,
• In an emergency, this includes responding to emergency calls as a volunteer firefighter or rescue worker.

Passenger limit

If you are under the age of 18, you can only carry one passenger under the age of 21. Unless a licensed parent or other adult acting on behalf of the parent is in the front passenger seat. However, after holding the license for her one year, she may carry up to three passengers under the age of 21 under the following circumstances:

• Travel to and from school-sponsored activities.
• A licensed driver over the age of 21 sits in the passenger seat.Also
• in case of emergency.

Learner permit holders may not carry more than one passenger under the age of 18.

(Family members are not subject to boarding restrictions)

Violation of curfews or passenger restrictions may result in the suspension of your driver’s license.

Restrictions on mobile phones and wireless communication devices

Starting January 1, 2021, it will be illegal for anyone to possess a handheld personal communication device (such as a smartphone) while driving a motor vehicle on Virginia highways.
