Freiburg would have fancied themselves before kicking off with Gladbach’s defensive weakness evident in the absence of Itakura and Elvedi. I couldn’t. Gregorich approached occasionally, and Kone impressed Dai Fallen.
After a disappointing loss to Mainz last week and new signing Hiroshi Itakura being ordered to start, including a suspension for today’s match, Gladbach hosts Freiburg to mark the action of the Bundesliga Matchday 6. was attached. Both sides roared out of the block five minutes into the game. With all the players on their feet, Neuhaus was forced to withdraw from the evening just after the half hour mark after hitting his knee hard. Nathan Ngumou entered the fight in place of the German in place of Di Foren after joining at the end of the summer from Toulouse in August. The teams remained inseparable at half-time despite plenty of chances on either end. Mark Flecken is definitely the busiest of the two goalkeepers at that stage of the match.
As the second 45 minutes resumed, both teams battled hard for possession. Christian Gunther was cautioned when he felt he went down cheaply when Scully fought over the ball. The Freiburg captain ran into trouble after protesting against Tobias Stieler. Freiburg were starting to slip into danger with his half hour remaining – Lienhardt was forced out but Stindl was unable to direct his right-footed shot far into his corner.
From around the 65th minute, the flow began to change to the Breisgau side, and the second half was an unusual development. Doan started popping into his pocket of space, but Gunther didn’t budge, firing a snapshot into the experienced Jan Sommer’s throat. Streich then turned to the bench, giving his side the edge as Keitel and John replaced Eggstein and Kiele. Doan’s final involvement of the night pulled out a great save from Sommer. With 10 minutes remaining, the final dice were rolled from both sides. Griffo and Brisk Doan replaced Schede and Weishaupt, and Gladbach replaced Wolff and Borges Sanchez.
Nils Petersen, the infamous Bundesliga ‘Joker’ understudy, was in the final touches. With two minutes of injury time remaining, neither team could create a goal-scoring chance, leaving Freiburg second in the Bundesliga table heading into next week. Streich’s side will face Greek powerhouse Olympiacos on Thursday, with Gladbach gearing up for the Leipzig side under Marko’s Lose coach.
