In New Jersey, poetry readings are everywhere: coffee shops, bars, record stores, CBD lounges and parks. Damien Lucci, Chris Rockwell, Cord Moresky, Ras Hell, Don Krypton and others have hosted numerous poetry events. Centered in Monmouth County, these poetry shows run all the way from Newark to Tuckerton. These are not yesterday’s poetry readings, they are fun, sassy, very young and working class.
“We just wanted to do it differently. From classrooms and bookstores to people who don’t know they need it. Poetry is for beggars and kings. We work.” I wanted to reach people’s hearts with poetry.” Damien Lucci Said.
Every night there is at least one poetry event, usually two or three. Anyone is welcome. Poetry events are usually free, and during the open his mic portion of the night anyone can sign up to share their work. This is a working-class poetry movement emerging throughout the Garden State.
