SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Sept. 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — NewHydrogen, Inc. (OTC: NEWH), developer of green hydrogen generators, today reports advances in its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts Did. It is iridium-free and used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers.

The goal of the NewHydrogen-sponsored research at UCLA is to lower the cost of green hydrogen by eliminating or significantly reducing the use of precious metals in electrolyzers. Electrolysers currently rely on rare materials such as iridium and platinum. These materials often represent a significant portion of the cost of the electrolyser.

In 2021, NewHydrogen-funded UCLA researchers developed a non-precious metal-based catalyst without the use of iridium, but with significantly improved OER in the acidic conditions of PEM electrolysers. Since then, ongoing research at UCLA has focused on identifying optimal modification methods and establishing scientific evidence to support their superior performance. A detailed analysis of the catalytic materials before and after structural modification may also provide avenues for further improvements in the future.

As previously mentioned in the company’s June 2022 report, OER catalyst samples before and after structural modifications were subjected to a number of tests and measurements. Further analysis of the obtained data established significant scientific evidence supporting the superior performance of the OER catalysts.

  • The doped elements are arranged within the modified structure of the catalyst in specific ways related to enhanced material properties and are therefore regarded as the origin of superior OER performance.
  • After prolonged OER cycles, the average distance between specific atoms and coordinating atoms in the modified catalysts changed significantly less than in the unmodified catalysts. A smaller change in average distance suggests a higher stability of the modified catalyst.

NewHydrogen CEO Dr. David Lee said: “We have great confidence in Dr. Huang and her team. We look forward to more exciting achievements in 2023 as we systematically expand our technology focus beyond catalysts.”

About New Hydrogen

NewHydrogen develops groundbreaking green hydrogen generators that use renewable energy to produce low-cost green hydrogen. Hydrogen is the cleanest and most abundant fuel in the universe. Zero emissions, only water vapor is generated during use. Unfortunately, hydrogen does not exist in its pure form on Earth and must be extracted from sources that contain it. For centuries, scientists have known how to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using a simple and sophisticated device called an electrolyser. Unfortunately, the main component of hydrogen generators, the electrolyser, is still very expensive. NewHydrogen develops breakthrough technology that will enable the next generation of low cost electrolysers. Our initial focus will be on replacing and reducing expensive rare earth materials, ushering in a green hydrogen economy that Goldman Sachs has estimated will have a future market value of his $12 trillion.
