Ohio University Wins Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for Fifth Consecutive Year

Ohio University has received the 2022 Higher Education in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity for the fifth consecutive year.

Presented to U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, the HEED Awards recognize OHIO’s ongoing initiatives to promote diversity, equity and inclusion on all campuses . OHIO and his 102 other awardees will be featured in his November 2022 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine, the oldest and largest publication focused on diversity in higher education .

The schools were selected based on the strategic and innovative steps they have taken to ensure that diversity and inclusion are a fundamental part of their programs, events, training, curricula and employment practices.

“The HEED Awards process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions about student and employee recruitment and retention. It also includes questions about diversity, and leadership support for many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to scrutinizing each application when deciding who will be selected as her HEED Award recipient. We are looking for institutions that have diversity and inclusion woven into them.”

Now in its 11th year, the HEED Awards are the only national awards to recognize U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses.

The HEED Awards recognize OHIO for its continued efforts to refocus on core strategic priorities to ensure access, inclusion and success. To support inclusive excellence across the campus, OHIO provides multifaceted education related to recruitment, retention, student leadership development, academic success, inclusive education, diverse faculty leadership, and active campus-wide diversity and inclusion education. Ohio University has taken many steps in recent years to strengthen its diversity and inclusion. This includes launching the Make Respect Visible initiative on campus and across Athens. This joint initiative promotes a culture of respect within the OHIO community and reduces prejudice through open and respectful dialogue. A campus designed to highlight the voices of people of diverse backgrounds, including gender, race, LGBTQ+ identity, and religious and spiritual beliefs, knowing that students have a place of support There are several different initiatives. Some of the programs include the Diversity Opportunity Here Fund, Divers Faculty Mentoring Program, ALAANA+ Women’s Leadership Cohort, Ohio Men of Excellence Network (O-MEN), and Diversity Leadership Ambassador Program. These programs provide a diverse constituency, including students, staff, and faculty, with a space to feel empowered by personal experiences and professional mentorship opportunities.
