Before the game against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers, graduate student Nicole Douglas broke the ASU scoring record with just two goals. It took Douglas just six minutes to score the first of his six goals for the Sun Devils on Thursday in a 6-2 win.
All eyes were on Douglas as she was expected to break the scoring record in the next few games. After Douglas scored the first goal, the Sun Devils came out strong against a solid UAB team. This tied the previous record of 50 set by Stacy Tulloch. The Blazers fought back with a Stella Lawson goal in just eight minutes.
Both teams were competitive and even played football in the first half. The ball got stuck near midfield, and juniors Lucy Johnson and graduate student Alexia Delgado shot shots to create chances at the net.
The Sun Devils started the second half again with a quick score by freshman Enasia Colón, her first goal as a Sun Devil, just like the first half. Building up Colon’s first career goal in an ASU uniform, the Sun Devils continued to dominate the midfield by putting the Blazers in an uncomfortable situation with intense pressure.
With the Tempe sun pouring down on the team and with just 25 minutes remaining, Douglas made ASU football history by receiving the ball from Johnson, splitting two defenders and burying the ball in the bottom right corner. . It was Douglas’s 51st goal as a Sun Devil, making the London native Douglas the all-time top scorer in school history.
Scoring two goals, the Sun Devils did not slow down their play. They kept the pressure on and UAB turned the ball over after being trailed by two. Just four minutes after him, graduate student Eva van Dusen scored his first goal of the season.
The Blazers responded with another goal from Lawson after a misunderstanding between the Sun Devil defense and freshman goaltender Pauline Neres.
Still, with a comfortable 4-2 lead, the Sun Devils closed out a historic game by two goals behind sophomore Kelly Matthews and grad student Alexia Delgado to secure victory.
The Sun Devils have canceled their Sept. 4 and Sept. 8 games due to the COVID-19 outbreak within the program. His next match is against Granbling on September 14th.
volleyball
ASU Volleyball trekked to Atlanta to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Sun Devils faced No. 5 Georgia Tech, Florida International University, and the University of Dayton.
On Friday, ASU played Dayton and won 3-2. With the win over the Flyers, senior outfielder Iman Isanovic hit his 1,000th kill in his volleyball career.
The win over Dayton soon moved to a game against the Florida International as the Sun Devils won 3–1 over the Panthers. Isanovic and his sophomore Geli Cyr led the team in kills.
The Sun Devils took on Georgia Tech on Saturday. ASU got off to a strong start against the undefeated Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-22 respectively.
Jr. Marta Levinska led ASU’s offense with five kills. Levinska had the most successful bargains on set. ASU he won 25-13.
The fourth set was difficult for the Sun Devils as the first 10 points were riddled with serve errors and defensive problems. Georgia Tech dominated the court with 12 kills and 11 assists to keep their energy up in the set. Did. ASU’s Jaden Ravnsborg maintained a strong defense for the Sun Devils with four digs and his five serves his receptions. ASU he lost 10-25 to Georgia Tech.
The Sun Devils’ next competition will take place on September 9th at the Baylor Invitational.
