The Victoria ISD is committed to ensuring the safety of our students and staff, and the safety and security of our district, campus and facilities is a top priority for district and campus administrators.
Prior to the tragic events at Uvalde CISD, VISD began taking steps to enhance the safety and security of its campus and facilities. However, as events such as Robb Elementary School, Oxford High School, Santa Fe High School, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School continue to occur, VISD faces an ongoing need to implement and upgrade district- and campus-wide response and recovery efforts. I am very aware of gender.
We also know it’s important for families to know and familiarize themselves with the terminology the school district uses regarding campus safety and security. So today we are going to talk about lockdowns and holds on campus. Our desire is to communicate to influence and lead with radical transparency. Because we believe this builds trust. We want you to feel comfortable knowing what is going on inside your school, and we believe it helps to understand the language of the safety code.
The district has 23 campuses across Victoria, close to businesses and communities. Sometimes local law enforcement has to work close to campus. In the event of such an event, districts should lock down, protect, or put campuses on hold.
Emergency response guide
VISD kicked off the 2022-23 school year with an emergency response guide (flip chart) in every VISD classroom. Guides are quick reference tools that guide you through how to deal with various campus emergencies (lockdowns, safety, retention, parent-child reunions, etc.). lockdown
A lockdown is when there is a threat or danger within a school building and is not limited to parental custody battles, intruders, or active shooters. Lockdown uses classroom security to protect students and staff from threats.
safety
Safety is where a threat or danger exists outside the school building. Secure uses school building security as a shell to protect against outside events such as immediate violence or criminal activity, or dangerous animals on playgrounds.
possession
A hold is called if a hallway needs to be cleared during a class change.
How can parents be contacted?
Parents/guardians will be notified in the district notice text if the campus is locked down, protected, or placed on hold due to local law enforcement activity. A district notification text will also be sent to parents when the lockdown or hold is lifted.
Parents/guardians should contact campus to ensure phone and email are up to date to receive these district notifications. Receiving this notification is not a message to pick up a student. This message is to keep you informed of the status of the building as we work to ensure everyone’s safety and details.
If the campus is otherwise locked down, protected, or held, the school district, along with law enforcement agencies, including the campus’s School Resource Officer (SRO) and the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office, should identify threats to the safety of students and staff. to investigate. In the event of credible disruption at our school, the school district will contact you immediately. We strive to deliver accurate information as quickly as possible. You can also “close the loop” with families, teachers, staff and students by communicating when the situation is over. We will share as much information as possible without compromising confidentiality or making the situation less secure.
If the school district is in a position to warn you to pick up the student, you will also receive those instructions in your school district’s notice. Having a reliable number is essential to receive these notifications and timely updates.
The school district is committed to transparency with parents, staff, and the community, and will communicate important information about what we are doing to stay proactive and vigilant to maintain the safety and security of VISD. We strive to provide the most up-to-date information.
It is important to remember that school districts work diligently to discover, understand, and report facts to the community. These results don’t generate as quickly as rumors and information from live events, but our aim is to be transparent and accurate in the information we provide to parents and communities.
