When Genno Smith was in West Virginia, there was much hope for his NFL future. He was one of the college quarterbacks.
Things didn’t go his way with the New York Jets, and he entered the backup phase of his career. The Seattle Seahawks were ridiculed for trading Russell Wilson and giving Smith a starting chance.
It took a long time, but the night Wilson returned to Seattle, Smith finally got the game of his NFL career.
Smith did most of the damage in the first half, but that was enough. Seattle’s defense had some big goal-line stands to maintain its first-half lead, denying Wilson any chance of defeating the team in front when he returned to Seattle. With 20 seconds left in the Broncos he tried his goal on a 64-yard field, but Brandon McManus fumbled and the Seahawks held on to his 17–16 win.
Smith completed the first 13 passes and had two touchdowns in the first half to give Seattle the lead. It cooled off after that, but the defense made some clutch plays to put it up. The Broncos’ bizarre decision to run time in the final seconds and attempt a desperate field goal will be talked about all week.
The Seahawks aren’t expected to win many games this season, and how good they are remains to be seen. But winning the opener against the former quarterback had to be sweet. . Especially for Smith.
Seahawks lead first half
The Seahawks came out quickly. Perhaps it had something to do with the Broncos not playing key players during the preseason, but Denver was sloppy on both sides. There were multiple issues on defense, especially with linebackers trying to cover tight ends.Smith completed his 13 passes in the first. Many of his big plays, including both touchdowns in the first half, went to the tight end. he was sharp
The Broncos stayed in the game due to a long pass from Wilson to Jerry Jeudy. continued. This is another sign of a team that didn’t play in preseason.
The Broncos scored their fourth goal at 1 and gave it to Melvin Gordon. He fumbled just short of the goal line and Seattle recovered. The Broncos are back inside his 5 after Seattle loses a fumble. Seattle also recovered it.
Seattle played well in the first half and was lucky to lead in the 4th quarter.
Broncos run into trouble near the finish line
The Broncos failed to score near the goal line. The Broncos fielded in his goal in the fourth quarter, though he was back inside the 5-yard line but again failed to get into the end zone. They trailed 17-16 after that.
At that point, the Seahawks needed Smith to make a few plays to keep Wilson on the sidelines. Seattle went three-and-out, and with two shorts his passes jammed, Smith was sacked by Bradley on his 3rd down by Chubb.
Wilson had to work in 4:02, starting with his own 22. The same fans who booed Wilson before the game had to get nervous. Wilson has mastered his game-winning drive and has done so many times in that stadium. It was great drama, just as the NFL hoped it would be when it scheduled Wilson’s return in Week 1.
Tight end Albert Okwegbunam hit a third-down catch with great reach to get the first down and keep the drive going. Okwuegbunam was stopped short, but put in a great effort to just barely get his first down. Wilson scored another third down conversion for Williams. The Broncos were nearing field goal range. The Broncos fell back with a rushed first-down pass to Williams as the pass rush came. Wilson threw poorly and lost the ball while trying to pull it back. He faced a third and fourteen. Williams gained yards on third down and set up 4 and 5 in the final minute.
With three timeouts remaining, the Broncos inexplicably reduced their time to 20 seconds before calling timeouts. The Broncos then attempted instead of going for a 64-yard field goal. McManus narrowly missed it on the left flank. It was a clockwork fiasco that led to the decision to go for the field goal. McManus gave his best, but this is his goal on the field that many kickers fail to achieve. It would have made more sense to leave it to Wilson.
The Seahawks no longer have Wilson. But they won him.
