Union County’s 4-H program encourages students in grades 1-12 to explore their interests and share their knowledge.
Union County 4-H clubs are gearing up for the new season, and students in grades 1 through 12 are invited to join in the fun. Students and their families are encouraged to attend the 4-H Club Open House on Friday, September 23 to meet with her 4-H club leaders this year and learn more about topics for the 2022-2023 school year. Students and parents interested in attending the 4-H Open House must pre-register by emailing Union County 4-H Agent James Nichnadowicz (jnichnadowicz@ucnj.org).
The open house will be held on Friday, September 23, from 6:39 pm to 8:00 pm at Union County’s Trailside Natural Science Center at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside.
Students can enroll in up to two clubs per year. There is a fee to attend each class, which varies by activity.
This year’s list of clubs includes archery, cooking, engineering, gardening, LEGO robotics, crafts, outdoor exploration, civic service, and sewing. Students can also join clubs that encourage exploration in multiple fields. Club members meet monthly with adult leaders during the school year to plan activities and programs.

• 4-H clubs, grades 1-3, exploring different skills and hobbies
Union County 4-H is part of the USDA’s 4-H program. The nation’s largest youth development program, 4-H began as a way to encourage young people in rural areas to learn about innovative new agricultural practices. The focus on innovation and leadership continues today through age-appropriate topics and activities.
In Union County, 4-H is operated by the Rutgers Cooperative Society of Union County as part of the Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. The county commissions are supported in part by the Union County Commission, which has offices in the Union County Complex at 300 North Avenue East, Westfield.
