Villanova School of Business dean resigns at end of school year

Joyce EA Russell, dean of William O’Toole at Villanova Business School, plans to step down at the end of the school year in May, the school announced. She will remain with VSB as Dean Emeritus and Professor of Administration and Operations.

“I absolutely love us too teacher-scholar model. At Villanova, I know other leaders across campus and I’m proud of the fact that we’re all working together,” she told P&Q. “We are so concerned with teaching, learning and service that it is how we recruit people and how we reward and promote people.”

Prior to VSB, Russell was Senior Associate Dean at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, where he led both undergraduate and graduate business programs, corporate and global partnerships. Prior to that, he was a full professor at the University of Tennessee School of Business.

Russell plans to take a year-long sabbatical to work on several leadership books she’s authoring. She was recently elected Chair of Women Administrators in Management Education, an affinity her group within the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) that seeks to transform her School of Business and business education. She sits on the boards of other business and leadership organizations, as well as other important her AACSB committees.

“The VSB has enjoyed tremendous success during Dr. Russell’s seven years as Dean of Helen and William O’Toole,” said Villanova President Pastor Peter M. Donohue in a statement. “From achieving top rankings in undergraduate and graduate programs to building a strategic vision that enabled the school to grow in visibility and reputation, VSB has flourished throughout Dr. Russell’s tenure. We thank Villanova for her service and contributions and congratulate her on her transition into her new role at the university.”

As VSB’s Dean, Russell oversees approximately 1,700 undergraduate programs and approximately 1,000 graduate and executive programs. VSB’s undergraduate employment rate is 98.9%, the average salary of MBA students has increased by 25%, and the alumni network is 31,550. The school recently revamped her part-time MBA program to offer a more flexible and modern curriculum.
