WV Department of Education Announces 2023 Teacher Awards

Charleston, West Virginia (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and the West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) announced Amber Nichols as the 2023 West Virginia Teacher of the Year in a ceremony Tuesday evening. Amber Nichols is a kindergarten teacher at Eastwood Elementary School in Morgantown, West Virginia. She has been teaching for her 21 years and holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Shepherd University and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Virginia. Nichols is an active member of Eastwood Elementary School’s Leadership, Curriculum and Behavioral Interventions team, mentoring future educators. She always strives to set rigorous academic and social-emotional goals for each child in her class, creating a rich classroom environment where all students feel safe, loved and appreciated. Nichols also enjoys writing and spends time with her husband, three children, and two dogs.

“Mrs. Nichols is an outstanding educator and a true representative of great teachers across the state. She perfectly embodies the qualities and intent of this prestigious award,” said Superintendent Roach. . “She cares deeply about her students and community and we believe she will be an inspiration to many. We thank her for her hard work in our public schools.”

West Virginia has one of the longest and most consistent teacher of the year programs in the nation. The goal is to identify and recognize the importance and influence of teachers in the mountain state primary and secondary classrooms. By recognizing those who bring honor to their profession, WVDE honors the extraordinary work that goes on every day in schools across the state.

As the 2023 winner, Nichols will receive a year-round vehicle from Toyota Motor Manufacturing in West Virginia. $5,000 from both Highmark West Virginia and Horace Mann Companies. his $1,000 classroom grant from the West Virginia Education Association; His two night stay at Tiger Lake State Park from West Virginia State Park. $250 Amazon Gift Card from West Virginia Professional Educators. $500 from the West Virginia Federation of Teachers. Each finalist will receive a $300 Donors Choose classroom grant from Horace Mann Companies and a $25 gift card from Adams Hallmark. Winners in each county will receive a $300 classroom grant from the West Virginia Lottery and an artwork from the Brenco Glass Company.
