Mark Mothersbaugh, frontman of iconic new wave rock band DEVO and now a 35-year veteran of film and television composers, performed nostalgic music at the Denver Film Festival special event at the Denver Botanic. It spoke to a house full of both fans and aspiring composers. Friday garden.
The evening celebrated Mothersbaugh’s career, from his breakout 15 episodes of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” through his work with filmmakers such as Taika Waititi, Wes Anderson and Lord Miller, to his 50th career in music and cinema. Among Mothersbaugh’s 250 TV and film credits are the 2001 classic ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ (2004), and almost all of the ‘Rugrats’ franchise.

Befitting his subversive nature, Mothersbaugh told a great story about how he liked to incorporate subliminal messages into his commercial work, but had to quit after he was found to have been tinkering with ads for Hawaiian Punch. I did.
Mothersbaugh was in good sport before the program, posing with fans wearing DEVO’s iconic Energy Dome helmet. As Mothersbaugh explained, the dome was influenced by the German Bauhaus movement, geometric fashions, and Aztec temples. He thought it was groovy that the band members didn’t look fashionable — they looked more like Lego toys.
