The Grand Valley State women’s soccer team played at home to Central Missouri University (UCM) on September 2, ending in a 2-2 draw.
Both sides of the offense struggled to find a consistent rhythm, but the Lakers were the only team to score on eight total shooting attempts in the first half. However, GVSU pushed his UCM Mule defense all the way down and played aggressively close to the opposing goal.
GVSU’s first goal was an assist for fifth-year forward Kennedy Metzger, coming from senior forward Kennedy Bearden about four minutes before the first half (41:20).
“My strategy was to change the point of attack and switch the ball left and right,” Metzger said. “Thanks to my assists, we couldn’t find the back of the net, but we can always count on Kennedy to put the ball behind us.”
Sophomore goaltender Kendall Robertson, who played all 90 minutes in the UCM match-up, was able to fend off the Mules after scoring in the first half with the Lakers heading into the halftime break with the scoreboard 1-0.
Just under nine minutes into the second half, UCM tied the game 1-1 with a free-kick attempt (53:49). Lava’s attack proved effective again as UCM took a 1-2 lead from him as he was able to get the ball back into the net during his corner kick (69:20) .
But the Lakers didn’t let the momentum shift dominate the rest of the game. GVSU found a groove and he tied the game 2–2 with Metzger’s goal (75:09) assisted by sophomore defender Stephanie Sturgeon and his sophomore midfielder Ryan Fetty. rice field.
After the Lakers scored their second and final goal of the entire match, defensive stops followed for both GVSU and the Mules, with each side saving a total of four shots. Both opponents displayed excellent defense, but both teams struggled to get the referee’s attention as the Lakers scored a total of 10 fouls (8 from Mules).
Commenting on the overall result of the game, head coach Katie Haltin said that both the defensive presence and overall athleticism of their opponents made it difficult for the Lakers to find success when attacking UCM’s goal. said he did.
