Three young athletes were among the six dead in a devastating car accident on a closed road in Barry last weekend, local sports bodies confirmed Monday.
The Barry Minor Lacrosse Association and Simcoe County Football have identified Luke West, Curtis King and River Wells as dead. In addition, one man and two women, both believed to be in their 20s, died.
Barry Police are still investigating the circumstances of the fatal one-vehicle crash and have not provided any other information at this time, including who the victims were or how they knew each other. Hmm.
However, information circulating on social media has provided a glimpse of who the victims are.
According to the Bombers Jr. C Lacrosse Club, Luke West was a lacrosse player and coach and played the sport almost his entire life.
“We love you. We miss you. We appreciate the time spent with you,” reads a Twitter statement shared by the club and association.

Curtis King and River Wells were former athletes who played for the Innisdale Invaders and Barrie North Vikings, according to Simcoe County Football.
“We remember not only what these great athletes did on the field, but the great people they had in their lives,” reads the Football League’s Instagram post.
In another tribute, the Barry Bruisers flag football team identified Wells as a “fierce competitor and extraordinary athlete” that many will miss.
Two separate online fundraising efforts have been established for the King and Wells families, both of which have raised thousands of dollars as of Monday morning.
Jason Wright, who claims to be King’s biological father, says his son was vibrant and always willing to help anyone. Speaking briefly with CBC Toronto, he offered his condolences to the other affected families and asked them all to give them some privacy.
“I want to take a moment to offer my condolences to the families of those affected,” Wright said.
The six people killed in the crash are believed to be the same group reported missing hours before police discovered the crash site.
CBC Toronto is working to confirm the identities of the other people killed before releasing further details.
Crash at closed construction site, city says
On Monday, the city of Barry said the crash occurred at a construction site in the city that had been closed to vehicles for months.
Officers discovered the crash site around 2 a.m. Sunday in the area of Mackay Road and 27 Simcoe County Road, police said.
The city said the area, which is located near major construction sites on McKay Road and Veteran’s Drive, is closed for ongoing water, sewage and road work and is being managed by contractors.
“we [devastated] to hear news of accidents in the area,” Mayor Michael Prowse said in a release.
“This is an ongoing Barry Police investigation and as always, if there is anything City staff can do to help, we will.”
The city lowered all flags at City Hall, saying it was thinking of the six friends and family members who were killed.
