Virginia wanted a solid show to close out their non-conference play and head into ACC action with momentum. The 5 UVA women’s soccer team played a frustrating 0-0 draw against VCU at Crockner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The VCU entered the game with a 2-1-4 record, so it’s safe to say that the Cavs may have overlooked their opponents, especially after scoring 10 goals, including 5-0 in their final two games. Rout at the time-No. 23 Memphis last Sunday. With an ACC match just around the corner, UVA may have been caught in anticipation of some heavyweight fights with conference rivals looming over the horizon.
For whatever reason, the Cavaliers didn’t perform their usual standards on the offensive end: Virginia didn’t score a single goal despite a 24-7 win over VCU. The Rams were far more accurate in scoring chances, with him scoring five of his seven shots. With UVA, only 6 of the 24 shots fit in the frame. Virginia also had a 6–0 advantage on corner-kick chances.
Solid goalkeeping play is a given in a shutout draw, but both teams’ goalkeepers played phenomenal. VCU keeper Whitney Horton made six saves to keep the Cavaliers off the board, including a great second-half stop that blocked Virginia’s best scoring chance of the game. Stora and Hayley Hopkins pushed up fast and had a great 2-1 chance. Spanstra scored seven goals on the season, passing the ball to Virginia’s top scorer, Hopkins. Hopkins led Whitney to his Horton and he was left behind one-on-one, but the VCU goalkeeper played brilliantly and swerved off the line, blocking Hopkins’ try with a sliding right foot.
Kayla White also performed well between the Virginia posts, saving all five of VCU’s shots. Most notably was a first-half diving save by Ella Higgins, who shot from the left wing.
Hayley Hopkins led the Cavaliers with six shots, while Alexa Spanstra had three, both with two on goal. His two other shots into the goal for UVA were from his rear Godfrey, but none found the mark.

A 0-0 draw was definitely not a satisfying result for the Cavaliers, who wanted to close out an eight-game non-conference schedule with eight wins. However, UVA has remained undefeated in the season with his 7-0-1 and ideally this undesired result will see Foose join his ACC play and soon face some elite competition. Helps you refocus when
Next up, Virginia will face their toughest challenge yet as the Cavaliers head to Chapel Hill for a match against No. 2 North Carolina (7-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
