TAHLEQUAH – After the initial announcement earlier this year, Horton Records teamed up with Jeremy Charles to host an album release party for the first-ever all-Cherokee music album, Anvdvnelisgi.
‘Anvdvnelisgi’ is a groundbreaking contemporary music album with original songs performed in Cherokee. The album’s title means “Performer”.
Charles, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and owner of FireThief Productions, says the album took about a year and a half to make.
“Honestly, it’s such a relief and a celebration,” Charles said.
Charles added that the album features 12 artists, 10 of whom do not speak Cherokee. translated into language.
“It was really fun for them because they were working so closely with someone who spoke a fluent language,” Charles said. We rewrote it as we could, critiqued the syllables, and all the way through to recording day.
Cherokee National Holiday attendees can attend free concerts at One Firefield and hear a wide variety of music in Cherokee, including pop, R&B, hip-hop, folk/Americana, country, reggae, and metal. I was.
“It’s kind of a no-brainer for everyone,” Charles said. “This album contains all sorts of intriguing genres, and that was kind of the point because we want people to be inspired by the possibilities. I don’t think there are many people who play Cherokee other than the song
Heavy metal singer Colby Looper has a song on the album he performed called “Uktena,” which is derived from a traditional Cherokee story.
“I just took some stories I heard about Uktena from the Cherokee tradition and wrote a song about those stories,” Ruper said. “My song already had a Cherokee theme, so the process of translating my song might have been a little easier than some others.”
Looper stated that he pursued music outside of work and was approached by Charles to work on songs for the album.
“Knowing that I was Cherokee and a musician making original music, every time Jeremy started this project for ‘Anvdvnelisgi’ he contacted me and said he was interested in this. So he had to work with me with a speaker/translator to translate one of my songs into Cherokee,” Looper said.
Two of the album’s artists wrote original songs in Cherokee without translation, including Agalisiga Mackey and Zebadiah Nofire. Mackie said country singer Jimmie Rodgers inspired a song he contributed titled “Gatrohiha”.
“I think it’s easier to write a song in Cherokee than it is to write it in English and then put it in Cherokee,” McKee said. “But I really respect the people who had to put their songs from English into Cherokee. It’s hard. It’s hard.”
Mackey said his goal is to inspire people to speak and write their music in their native language.
“My goal is to understand the language in front of people, hopefully to encourage people of all ages to start speaking and compose songs in that language or their native language if they are not Cherokee.” said Mackey.
