CINCINNATI, Ohio — In the Steelers’ season opener against the Bengals, Mike Tomlin immediately made history. In Sunday’s game, Tomlin officially started his 16th regular season as Steelers head coach, passing Bill Cower, the second-longest inducted coach in franchise history. Chuck Noll has coached the Steelers for a franchise-record 23 seasons.
Tomlin, who is currently the NFL’s second-longest tenured head coach behind the Patriots’ Bill Belichick, surpassed Cower for most regular-season wins in the Steelers’ 29-27 victory over the Bears last season. Tomlin only needed 232 games to reach 150 wins, making him the fourth fastest coach to reach that milestone.
When asked about the milestone, Tomlin said, “I appreciate the standards set by those who came before me.” It inspires us and challenges us.I appreciate being part of the Pittsburgh Steelers.I will do my job to maintain the standards.”

While Tomlin is still writing a chapter on his coaching career, Bryant McFadden, a former Steelers cornerback and football analyst for CBS Sports, believes Tomlin will join Knoll and Cower one day in Canton, Ohio. I feel that I have done enough.
“He’s out there now. If he decides to end his coaching career this season, he’s in the Hall of Fame,” McFadden said following Tomlin’s 150th win. McFadden said there are more similarities than differences when it comes to Cower and Tomlin, both defensive coaches. The pair have won more than 300 games, two Super Bowls, four AFC championship games, 15 division titles and 20 playoff appearances.
“They’re both serious types of coaches,” said McFadden, who played for both. “They only want professionalism, but week after week, day after day. They’re great motivation.” Thinking about them getting their teams together on the eve of the ball game and being able to say things we’ve never heard of.What was definitely influential was the very good coaches both coaches had. Unlike many of his teammates, McFadden worked alongside Tomlin before arriving in Pittsburgh in January 2007. Tomlin quickly developed a rapport with McFadden’s other teammates shortly after being named head coach. Tomlin’s connection with players is one of the reasons he’s consistently successful, he says, McFadden.

Ask anyone within the Steelers organization and they’ll tell you that Tomlin has limitless energy. That energy is present at practices, meetings, and every time Tomlin passes someone in the hallway. You can also see it on the sidelines inside.
Tomlin’s tremendous passion for the game is contagious to his players. When McFadden was asked to name the best part about playing for Tomlin, he spoke of Tomlin’s game day energy.
“He’s passionate about the game of football and sometimes it can’t be hidden. “I love it. I love to see my coaches energized and excited. Let’s get excited about.I understand you’re not covering or hitting anyone.Do it.”
Tomlin has done it for his players. So far, it’s served him well, and it should continue to serve him should he decide to walk around the sidelines in Pittsburgh.
