Coronation Street boss Ian MacLeod sees the future and thinks it could mean the end of soaps filmed on assembled sets, and the reality that needs to be created is Everything can be done using technology.
For the upcoming special episode, Iain and his team used a special kit. ‘Or many Avengers movies use a slightly larger version of this. It’s called a volume wall.
Iin explains how this works. “Essentially, it’s like a very new fan-dangle version of what they called green screen or back projection in the early days of talkies.
“But basically, it means you can put the actors anywhere you can imagine. You can shove there while drinking.
In an upcoming special episode, the team used the volume wall to create an epic stunt involving Kelly Neelan (Millie Gibson) and Gary Windass (Mikey North).
“What we did was create a nice rooftop sequence with a shimmering cityscape in the background,” says Iain. In order to be able to do something that is absolutely impossible in a normal location shoot. Even without a stunt performer, you can put real actors in very real danger.
“The camera can swoop and fly and move around in ways you can’t really. I just watched Rush and it already looks incredible.
It’s a one-off for this particular episode, but Iin was very impressed with how the technology helped achieve the effect he was looking for, and hopefully the technology will be used more widely in the future. I believe it will be used.
“We joked that there would come a time when we wouldn’t need the set anymore.
“You just need a volume wall and you can get in the Rovers and go into the Kabin with a bang. thinks that may not actually be too far from the truth. Having a physical set may be an anachronism.
“It’s unbelievable, mind-boggling. And the fact that you can be in the American savannah with the click of a finger, or be on the moon in a spacesuit with the click of a finger again.” The fact that you can do that is just amazing, completely amazing.
“Maybe more and more shows will be used as a genre when they want to do something big and grand, because they can do it a little extra.”
Iain is like someone with a new toy and clearly very enthusiastic explaining this new technology. “Everything was so exciting,” he says.
“I’ve never seen so many people make up a reason to go to a set when there’s really no reason to be there. Everyone wanted to go. I Never seen anything like it!”
