I hope Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin decides what type of leader he wants to be when it comes to race.
A few weeks ago, to much fanfare, Youngkin Resources and attention to Petersburga long-struggling city of 33,000 mostly black people just south of Richmond.
I wrote that despite the obvious politics involved in this partnership, the people of Petersburg simply want results and welcome help.
On Wednesday, however, the Republican governor, in less than a year in office, will overwhelm former Maine Gov. Paul LePage. Racist comments or violent threats against those perceived as hostile It has been in the national spotlight since at least 2016. continues to polish his national profile.
The unique “charm” of the LePage will be discussed later.
But Jonkin’s double-dealing approach to people of color is all his. The Washington Post recently his string of contradictions:
He went to historically black colleges and promoted plans for experimental schools, but opposed the concept of “racial equality” in educational policy.

I get it: there are benefits to pandering to a sizeable portion of the electorate. A focus on cultural issues, including public education, propelled Jonkin to the governorship. Donald Trump has repeatedly lied about his results, and his supporters have demanded that the candidates also come to terms with the lies.
However, LePage does not need such problems. Mr. Yonkin has honed his conservative integrity without endorsing bigotry or bullies, allowing him to continue to push his name in front of voters across the country.
Maine, with a population of 1.3 million, is far smaller than Virginia, or you may not know much about former two-term governor LePage, who is running for the lead again in the Northeastern state. Unless he’s eating Maine lobster, he probably doesn’t care.
But there’s no excuse for Youngkin’s ignorance. Youngkin could have easily gotten through this expedition and saved his powder for a more deserving Republican.
